Mythbusting Sunscreen

Mythbusting Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a pretty vital part of living in the UAE/Middle East and the sunny climate that we are lucky to enjoy almost all year round. So it’s imperative we get it right!

Further to our recent launch of the Sunkiss Mineral Sunscreen range in our store I wanted to take this opportunity to sift through a few of the facts from the fiction I come across most often when talking about sunscreen.

Myth 1

Wearing higher SPF’s give you more protection

It is very common to think that SPF 100 gives 3+ times the protection of an SPF 30. The reality is that no sunscreen offers 100% block and an SPF 30 will block 97% of the suns rays.

Paying more for higher SPF sunscreen is a false reassurance and doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a higher SPF.

Myth 2

Wearing higher SPF means I need to reapply my sunscreen less often

SPF has no impact on the length of time your sunscreen will protect your skin. Sunscreen regardless of it’s SPF should always be reapplied after swimming or every 2 hours – if not sooner.

Myth 3

Its cloudy and cool today, I don’t need sunscreen

Clouds are water vapour and do not protect you from the suns UV rays. Rain, snow, clouds or a mighty fine day you should still wear sunscreen!

Myth 4

Wearing sunscreen will prevent you from getting enough vitamin D

Vitamin D is needed for good bone health and is key to keeping our immune systems strong and you’ll be pleased to know that by wearing sunscreen you’ll not get in the way of this. Regardless of how much sunscreen you use, some UV rays will still reach your skin. Wearing sunscreen will however prevent you from developing skin cancers – the most common cancer in the USA today.

As you can see from the above whether you live in a sunny city like Dubai or not applying sunscreen everyday should be something that becomes as second nature as brushing your teeth everyday. The benefits are huge – when using the right sunscreen that is.

We recently added the Sunkiss Mineral Sunscreen range to our offering not just because its Mineral but because it’s locally made – yey to our carbon footprint!

It comes in aluminium bottles that are recyclable and refillable!

It’s also reef friendly so as far as a sunscreen goes it has covered every single sustainable need we could possibly hope for!
